In the article Butterflies in the traditional culture of the Nanai the author T.V. Melnikova, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Head curator of the Grodekov Khabarovsk Regional Lore Museum, tries to answer the question about the place of butterflies in the traditional culture of the Nanai. As a result of the field searching the author found out that etymology of Nanai names of butterflies had associative character. Catching Papilio maackii, connected with souls of living people, was banned. At the same time it was very popular to play catching butterflies , when the main objects for hunting were yellow and white butterflies. Pictures with butterflies present very rarely on the traditional clothes of the Nanai, as butterflies weren t considered to have magical protective might.
